A common problem all agents encounter, especially so in cities is the problem of parking. A good parking location for a vehicle is essential in ensuring line of sight (LOS) and gathering recordings behind tint or disguised.

Now you may be thinking, you would solve this problem through foot surveillance. This isn't always helpful, residential areas may not have many people on foot nearby, there may be nowhere to sit or bled in and a host of other reasons may want your bottom firmly planted in a car seat for this one.

So you arrive or even better, as part of a recce (reconnaissance) or planning, you notice a parking problem. I find it helpful to break up the different problems into categories, I will list the types of scenarios.

Why surveillance is always an hourly affair when dealing with Private Investigators

A common question or query we get is when offering our services to private individuals is "what happens if you don't get xyz? Video/photograph etc." The answer is always the same and that is we offer our time for an hourly rate and what happens, happens. We cannot control the world around us and we are an simply observer and recorder (most of the time). As such we do not make guarantees. But why not offer a fixed price?

Let's use an example to show:

Surveillance A

Task: Monitoring a property for establishing the occupants.

Outcome needed: Photograph or video of the occupant/s

Time needed for a high chance of success: 7 hours starting at 6am.

Hourly rate of £1 per hour, £7 total cost

The client would like a fixed price for the footage. The investigator could charge the 7 hours on a fixed price for the footage.

The investigators could get the footage quickly or slowly. If they get the footage quickly, great they've made extra money for their time and the client is happy. If it takes longer, say the home is empty and they spent 3 days waiting and go back empty handed. They may not get paid, only retain 50% or worse.

If the investigator charged a larger fee they could offset this risk. Perhaps charging for 15 hours. Now the client is paying more then they otherwise would on the basis that it could take longer. They may not be happy with this price. No one wins.

It is far better and fairer for both parties that a set hourly is set so that the results are given that match the level of commitment and fees paid to the investigators. For some this may be better or worse however the results will match the time needed to complete the task rather then paying a larger fee due to the investigator having to take out insurance by charging more on all cases on the chance they encounter a situation which eats into too much time or is not fruitful.

This is the same reason why we do preliminary checks on trace cases to ensure our fees match the time needed to gather the information needed rather then fixed fee models which mean everyone pays the same. Communism is great for those who need more but the people who need little are left bemused. Competitive pricing is key to succes s and so we price most work on a case by case basis the primary exception being surveillance which is always charged hourly.

Of particular note is a similar case in Brazil involving DCNS submarines.

PI Bala was an experienced investigator and previous member of the Royal Malaysia Police he was a respected witness and so his Statutory Deceleration which implicated the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia at the time sent shock waves internationally.

His declaration on 01/07/2008 meant he had made some powerful enemies and there are rumours he was offered 5 million RM (£873,000, $1.2M) to retract the statement.

That was until returning to Malaysia in February 2013 with a third statement retracting the second. He claimed he was threatened and could no longer stay in Malaysia. He subsequently died the next month from a myocardial infarction 15/03/2013.

Although it is a messy story with many twists and turns we are proud to say PI Bala did try to do the right thing from the outset. Unfortunately it appears he was coerced into changing his statement.

Then what we can only assume was due to ill health decided to come out once and for all to clarify. A common theme amongst those who are reaching the end of their lives, setting the record straight.

PI Bala's family have now sued for damages due to the exile from Razak. Private Investigator Bala's lawyer Americk Singh Sidhu (Barrister) attended a Tribunal in France regarding the Paris Scorpène Submarine deal and allegations of corruption in July 2013 however with the 2017 Brazil Submarine allegation it appears not much must have been learnt from it. The Tribunal was set to explore Altanyaa's death in relation to the corruption. There has yet to be any public release of information regarding the outcome of the tribunal.

What can we learn from this?

The political situation as well as the levels of corruption in a country can make it impossible or highly inadvisable to speak the truth. PI Bala fled the country and lost the last 4 years of his life in hiding in Chennai because he decided to reveal what was happening, unfortunately he implicated powerful people. The French sales/negotiators involved in the sales of these submarines have a level of responsibility. PI's all over the world should be very careful when challenging these types of individuals or exposing information. Although reputable investigators are against corruption and not too dissimilar from investigative journalists in some sense have a duty to the public when the circumstances present themselves, they should always protect themselves first. The repercussions in PI Bala's case are not the worst however unacceptable for telling the truth.

Deciphering personal network data for Private Investigators

When gathering personal network data on individuals for further analysis investigators can quickly fall into information overload. Especially when they lack the resources or knowledge to record data effectively for analysis. Social media network connections on public friends list, likes, shares etc can form interesting and insightful links.

This was used very effectively in a recent investigation where an address was proving allusive after Electoral roll, photograph analysis, land registry, ltd searches etc turned up nothing. Council housing based individuals who are not public registers can be difficult. The resulting connections analysis of the persons social media network turned up some interesting relationships. As a result a neighbour who through photographic analysis of a nearby wall of 2 pictures from both shed light on the location of the individual. The 2 stages of gathering and analysis these types of social media and other personal network data available open source can be invaluable.

The first stage is gathering the data and recording it. Sock puppet accounts are best used for collection however on media which does not give indicators of your viewership a more seasoned account may encounter less issues related to DDOS and data scalping protections on many websites. Macros, scripts or other tools can then be used to pull data from the accounts. Data will be in its nature incomplete with a myriad of private accounts and other hurdles.

Data depth is also important, 3-5 connections of depth is usually suitable e.g. friends of friends of friends, any further will stretch your systems resources for little to no benefit.

Most scripts and macros will keep the data in a set format for you to analyse. However not all tools will present or record data in a analysis friendly manner and as such you should consider this first. Are only the necessary data points being collected? Is the text/data presented in a format which can be compiled into groups? Think about your end result.

Once the data has been gathered and stored you can now move to the fun part of your data collection; analysis. There are many good tools however tools which have algorithmic sorting functions are best for user friendliness and relationship analysis. The first piece of data you will be looking at will be the top 5-10 individuals they share common connections with and have the most frequent interactions.

This enables you to perform manual checks of those accounts for clues. Once completed you should then begin pulling more data on the associated individuals from other open source databases for more data. Building profiles around the individuals would hopefully begin to shed led on the person under investigation however sometimes you may need to delve deeper into the persons connections. Useful data points such as large associations with certain groups or interest can reveal new revelations however we must always be careful that associations are not based on location, friends or family members.

A great tool for beginning to manually review data points and formulating further actions plans is using a white board to post data points printed out utilising magnets and strings.

What can a Private Investigator / Detective do and not do?

Private investigators can utilise a variety of techniques to gather information for private and business clients. Depending on local laws the techniques used and information shared may need to meet certain requirements. This is usually based on a legitimate interest in the information balanced against the right to privacy of those investigated. However this is mitigated by those of interest being a public body or company who do not enjoy the same rights as private citizens.

Public information and open source intelligence are generally accepted as legally obtained. This principle applies to surveillance where taking video or photos of areas accessible to the public where the person could reasonably expect privacy and fine to record. The area the agent is recording from also should be either a public place or with permission from the land owner.

Investigators cannot do any type of hacking, social engineering, fraud, lying or other types of trickery however again it is dependant on the laws of your local area.

A camcorder, a mirrorlesss or SLR with long range capabilities and a cover camera are the minimum to ensure you get the footage your client needs. Before engaging the use of any devices keep in mind if the footage will be helpful. You can be in the right place at the right time but without the right equipment then it just won't work.

- Full tank of petrol/gas

You never know where you may need to go and if you've bee instructed to follow them all the way then you need a full tank of petrol to ensure you don't get left behind filling up. Even worse is when you need to fill up and have to do it at the same station as the POI.

- Record keeping

Keep a record of everything that happens as it happens. Your memory is not perfect and not everything will have video footage. To ensure you have great records and happy clients write things down or make a record of things as they happen. Private investigators are known for their good record keeping skills, don't let us down.

- Bring a high visibility jacket and a dog lead

Versatility and adaptability is paramount as you never know when you may need to go on foot or go mobile in static situations. To help you will need a few social indicators that you are acting and behaving normally, remember abnormal or unusual behaviour is the best way of getting burned. Use these types of equipment to give the social cues that you are in the right place.

- Bring a urine bottle

A strong bladder is needed for all PI's however you will need a container for urine. Even if the surveillance is short bring a bottle for this. We recommended a dedicated bottle as this avoids any mess and will hopefully keep your vehicle seats clean. For female you may need to look into more technical devices with tubes or a funnel to ensure no mess. Don't get distracted because you need to go, bring a bottle every investigator needs one.

Extra tip!

Make sure to bring additional SD cards. Ensure they are high quality class 10, we recommend Sandisk Extreme Pro cards. Remember they can and do fail, higher quality cards are less likely to fail.

What makes a Trace? How do you Trace?

Tracing is 50% science, 50% art. You have a set process, databases to search, documents to request, certificates too peruse and then still nothing? Here comes the art.

The first part of your artistic side comes from taking information from social media. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Dating website like POF, Tinder etc and of course good old directories. The devil is in the details, using photographs and friends of friends details you piece together information. Sometimes as small as the time of day, the weather and other factors. Sometimes it as simple as the POI's sister taking a selfie on the driveway of the parents home (that's third party corroboration of your facts there sunshine).

Every PI has a process, every process is different. They usually start with a google and end with either a 2 hour job or 200 hour job. Ask us how we do it, you will get an answer but not the answer you want. The process, knowledge, wisdom from experience and our artistic traits of piecing information together, well that's our value. Indeed we cannot share this.

There are some great stories though. Like how we found someone's address starting with 1 photograph outside a Pub (the Pub's name was not visible), there is no greater feeling then cracking the almost impossible trace. You can learn a process but to really dig deeper is to understand the truly great tracers are artist who attack things with logic and thinking outside the realms of what most people see in just 1 photograph. All those smalls details matter, what they are wearing, the ground, the sun, the cloud, the bricks and oh don't forget the EXIF data even though most websites remove it.

To all the budding PI's and those who don't want to hire one for that Trace. Practice makes perfect, hone your skills, develop your process and don't forget that no one has a success rate of 100% even the pros. If only there was some foolproof way to tell if someone is following you, well there is no foolproof method, however there are some tricks and tips that our investigators at Operant know all too well.

First, we need to understand the term ‘anti-surveillance’. In its most distilled form, anti-surveillance is the method by which you counter any surveillance that is being conducted on you, either by identifying surveillance being conducted on you, or to avoid empty street and hide from it.

So how can we do some anti-surveillance?

1. Double back on yourself — Simple but effective, people walking in one direction usually don’t turn around unless they are lost, it will also give you a front view of whoever is behind you, if that person has changed direction to follow you, he or she might be on your tail.
2. The funnel technique — if people are following behind you on foot, they won’t be far behind. Try to walk down a quieter, more condensed area that opens out into an open space, a quick glance behind will reveal anyone following you.
3. What about vehicles? Similar techniques apply to vehicles, driving into a quieter area will reveal any cars behind you, unnatural legal maneuvers that are mimicked (such as going around a roundabout several times) can also be a dead giveaway as to someone trying to keep on your tail.

Covert Surveillance is a art practiced by many different types of professionals such as PI's, Detectives, Police, Information Services and other Government agencies. Covert surveillance is broken down into different types:

Static and Mobile

Pretexted - Hidden in plain sight with a reasonable excuse

Hidden -Hidden behind a vehicle tint, curtain etc and not visible

Crowd - Part of a crowd of other people

Part - Become part of the activity, group etc through action

Static Pretexted, static hidden, static crow, static part, mobile pretexted, mobile hidden, mobile crowd & mobile part.

Pretexted static, part mobile, crowd mobile & hidden static are the primary categories 80% of your surveillance will fall into. By the far the most comfortable can be hidden static but this is not always the case at all, you will have to get out into the bad world form behind your limo tint. Remember what your doing changes!

Recording

To conduct surveillance successfully you will need to record what happens efficiently and discreetly. This includes photography. Each type of surveillance has different issues for recording what happens, remember your memory is fallible! Making accurate records is vital to good surveillance. Mobile phones are useful, however I prefer pen and paper when in the vehicle.

Ensuring you have methods of recording at all times is vital, covert video is not a mobile phone! Do not rely just on your mobile phone.

Brief comments on international operations

During international operation there are many factors to consider which change how you work substantially. I will break them down into segments:

Legal changes mean what you can and cannot do can be different. Some countries are more relaxed and less likely to question your presence whereas others may be more suspicious of you, know your area and what you will need to prepare to look less suspicious THINK PRETEXT. Understand what the Police are likely to do with you in worst case scenarios and way up the risk vs reward.

Cultura l, people don't behave in the same way everywhere. Don't rely on tactics that work in the UK to work abroad. Remember to consider the cultural changes. People won't stay in the sun for long in warmer climates, you need to account for different patterns of behaviour!

Physical changes, things don't happen like they do the in the UK. From the shrubbery to deliveries at a business things don't happen in the same way. You may need to put in more hours or do more research.

Speak , learn the basics of the language. If you can get the words 'no', 'thank you' and other casual comments in the correct accent you can avoid suspicion in some situations. Remember also the opposite when researching areas speak to more people, you are not as familiar with the area and so talking with locals can help you target surveillance hours and locations more easily.

Pretext , you may need a pretext for the locals, your subject and for authorities. There is no easy pretext here if your carrying around expensive surveillance equipment. You must pre-text as a photographer, social media influencer or a companies PR department ideally to ensure your presence, equipment and other factors line up with your pretext.

Spy , you are a foreigner in this country, you are equipped with surveillance equipment, could you be accused of spying for another government? It sounds farfetched but the punishments can be severe so it is worth considering. I would avoid any politically unstable countries with little tourism due to this, however the job takes you where it takes you, be careful.

There is more than one type of surveillance…

‘Surveillance’, a word synonymous espionage, sneaking in the shadows, and trilby-topped, mac-wearing detectives. However, with the advancement of technology there are many ways in which surveillance can be conducted by private investigators.

Mobile- Mobile surveillance is when a vehicle is used to follow, track, and monitor a subject. An example of this would be to follow an individual who is driving by using your own vehicle to capture covert imagery.

Foot — Foot surveillance is where the subject and the operative are both using their feet as transport. An example of this would be an operative following a subject through a crowded city centre, maintaining sight (eyeball) on a subject through the busy streets.

Static- Static surveillance is where an operative can be in a vehicle or some other inconspicuous place where they are watching a single point of interest. An example of this would be an operative watching a front door from a vantage point to see who enters or leaves a premises.

Technical — Technical surveillance is a type of surveillance that utilises technology to aid investigations. An example would be a tracking device on a car, to determine the route or destination of a subject.

Online — Online surveillance uses open-source online resources to glean information about a subject. An example would be to use social media to get information about a subject’s general location.

Combined — Combined can be a mixture of all 5 of these different surveillance techniques that can be used together. For example, a 6 hour surveillance may include finding a subject’s address online (online surveillance) watching the subject leave the premises (static), following him in his car (mobile), planting a tracker on a subject’s car in a supermarket (technical), and following him through a shopping centre (foot).

Choosing the right camcorder for Covert Surveillance

When selecting a camcorder for covert surveillance it can be difficult to choose from the variety of options available to you. We at Operant look at these 3 things before we purchase any camera:

Minimum Lux - The minimum amount of light the camera needs to produce an image

Optical zoom - Zoom which is produced through optics meaning no decrease in quality

Resolution - The quality of the images

Minimum lux is incredibly important for those night time shots and lowlight situation we find ourselves in regularly. This is usually one of the most important numbers on the camcorder. The technology inside may be useful for lowlight outside of the stat of minimum lux however we recommend watching some video recordings of it in use and speaking to others first before making that conclusion as the minimum lux stat is usually best for determining night capabilities.

We also recommend ensuring the camera has some of these features too:

- Charging while recording

- Power on time, from a powered off state to recording, less then 4 seconds

- Maximum SD card size (128gb + ideally) for long term recordings

Charging while recording is ideal for longer surveillance work, even more preferable is charging while recording using a USB which can be plugged into a power bank or the vehicle, perfect. If you can get this feature for your camera it would be ideal. This may save you buying costly additional batteries.

The power on time is critical to ensuring you get the footage you need. You usually cannot keep the camcorder on standby for lengthy periods without emptying the batteries. However charging while recording options do mitigate this. The best option is that the camcorder switches on in under 4 seconds and is possible under 2 seconds for better models. This will prevent you missing those key moments; sooner or later it will happen.

Maximum SD card becomes more and more of an issue the higher quality the camcorder records in. The following are some suggested absolute minimum capacities needed for our type of use 720p (32gb+), 1080p (64gb+) & 4k (128gb+). If possible we suggest using a 256gb for 4k usage if the camcorder will allow for it, most at the present time are limited to 128gb. It is critical we utilise proper speed SD cards', Sandisk extreme pro or Lexar cards should do the trick.

We have looked at some of the options on the market today and provide our analysis of the models using our 3 point check. It is important to recognise the more expensive models as a whole tend to have higher maximum SD card capacity and most offer charging while recording.

As you can see 1080p remains the mainstay of the market and 4k comes at significant cost. The lux values tend to be lower in more expensive models however the Panasonic HC-V800EB-K offers amazing Lux values for a cost effective price point. However our budget pick at less then half of that price is the Canon R806 for an incredible £199, however this price does seem to fluctuate see the Canon store .

The Sony AX53 would be the all singing & dancing model however with only x20 optical zoom is leaves us wondering if there will be a model available soon with 4k image, low lux & good optical zoom, for now we must pick & choose. If you have to choose and want the best the AX53 will last you a long time, perhaps in conjunction with something with higher levels of zoom when needed.

The CX625 is particularly disappointing and is most definitely our worst option with it's only redeeming factor being the x34 optical zoom however that's where it's good points end.

Our best value pick has to be the Panasonic HC-V380EB-K with a Lux value of 4, 1080p resolution, 50x optical zoom, 128gb maximum SD card capacity, recording while charging & optical image stabilisation. Hands down for £239 you cannot go wrong with this one. For higher quality and better lux values the AX53 is still superior however this comes at the cost of reduced optical zoom and more then double the price.

Update 01/07/21 The Panasonic VX980 currently has 4k, 25x optical zoom and 2 min lux for less than £390.

No doubt a legend in his own right, however routinely crossing the line cost him dearly. It is a shame that much of the most prominent PI's appear to end up being killed or jailed, I guess they make the best stories. However a boon he retained was not informing on his clients and as such it seems he has been able to quite easily re-open albeit under a different heading for his enterprise but not overly dissimilar line of work as his reward. I believe him retaining long term records of his findings was his undoing, no doubt he would have still been charged however the charges would have been fewer and perhaps resulted in a smaller sentence.

Welcome to Sin City, Pattaya in Thailand has a notorious reputation for being awash with prostitutes, drugs and brash nightlife. So if your partner is going for the golf perhaps there is something else going on?

How a little becomes a lot

During investigative proceedings we start usually with limited and basic information. The goal is to expand what we know until the clients need are met. There are many considerations during the process such as if they are achievable, what the standard of proof is, how to gather the information, evaluating conflicting information and the level of discretion.

Imagine two different scenarios, both are plain and the conclusion obvious; but it should be considered in every case. Mr X wants us to find his estranged sister from 30 years ago and Mr Z who wants to find

out if his wife is having an affair. Now the information gathering techniques may be the same for both instances, the standard of proof may be the same but level of discretion would be very different. Indeed Mr X may be fine with us conducting interviews with the intention plainly laid out however Mr Z would definitely not. Each case has varying requirements in how it is conducted and each element of investigative practice is not always the same. A practical and legal approach is needed to ensure we act in the correct manner. In most cases discussing how we gather information with the client is an important part of the pre-investigative stage. In some cases a PI can assume higher burdens of proof or higher levels of discretion without any potential harm coming as a consequence. For example it would be safe to assume Mr Z would not like his wife's toy boy interviewed for a statement, we need not ask.

Once we have laid out how we will proceed we begin in attempting to make a little information become much more. Initially the basic personal bio is the primary concern for the subjects in question. Establishing date of birth, birth place, nationality, gender, physical description, address, phone numbers etc. Once we have established these facts we can use that information to begin gathering more. It's at this stage where we can reach information overload, it's important to reign in your information gathering abilities and focus on your clients needs. The colour socks they wore on Tuesday is meaningless to your client. The Human right to a private life is an important consideration as we have a legal requirement to only gather information that is essential to the investigation.

Once an adequate amount of information is gathered about the person we can take stock of what we have achieved. Put it in a plain format document and begin to question if it meets the clients needs. If in this case it does not we evaluate what we have and what is achievable.

Some investigations can be more difficult if the information you start with is more vague. Name only or name and business are common beginnings for investigations. Social media and Companies house registrations would be an obvious start however is it important not to discount the offline world as it's where the real action goes on. This can be the most difficult part of an investigation as when you have the initial personal information of the person it is infinitely easier to progress the investigation.

Much of this information may seem obvious to anyone who reads it but rest assured it is the obvious which is often forgotten as it enveloped in a shroud of minor details which may not be of any use to anyone.

What lens sizes do Private Investigators use?

Consider lens sizes for PI work is a critical aspect of DSLR photography and difficult to master. However, with some basics tips and tricks, you can achieve good results quickly.

It is of important to note that there are some great bridge cameras that can achieve solid results especially for long range high zoom situation and there are some really great specialist bridge camera models that can fit this need. This comes at the cost of reduced flexibility in the bridge camera, especially in aperture size. Mirrorless cameras perform better than DSLR's where images per second are needed above 2-3, think Paparazzi. Usually going up to 60fps (frame per second), 60 photographs per second, is essentially incredibly high quality video. With some newer models offering 50mp, we are very optimistic about the future of the technology.

However, most needs can be met with a DSLR and a camcorder, comparatively DSLR's are cheaper. Especially so for just the body. Low f stop telephotos still range at £1,500 - £4,000 which is the main expense.

As DSLR's become the inferior option for those who need more photos in a shorter time space, the mirrorless revolution will begin now as pricing becomes more competitive.

The most popular lens size for a private investigator is 400mm-800mm with larger aperture sizes for better lowlight performance, especially f4.5 and below. For closer work, most of which will still comparably far for the average photographer, a lens size of 200-400mm with a slighter large aperture of f2-3 would be more ideal. With that said, I would personally recommend carrying at least 4 different lens types as you can never be quite sure what you will encounter including distances and light levels.

I would categorise the 4 into these types:

Super long 800mm - Dark, low f-stop >5

Super long 600mm - High light, regular f-stop

Long 400mm - Good light, regular f-stop

Long 400mm - Dark, low f-stop >4

With these 4 you will rarely encounter or perhaps never encounter an investigation style photography need unmet. Any closer shots can be taken with hidden body cams or your mobile, which would be better suited to not being questioned about why your 3ft long camera is in their face.

Ensuring lowlight performance, much in the same way we are concerned are with minimum lux with camcorders, with our DSLR or mirrorless camera is of incredible importance and so the f-stop is essentially how much light the lens is able to gather for the size. As an example, a 400mm lens with f1.2 would be able to take photographs in lower light with a faster shutter speed than a 400mm lens with f3.8. This dynamic between moving objects, shutter speed and low light levels can be summarized with the following 'less light, more movement and lower shutter speed means poorer images for Private Investigators'. As such, we aim to minimise the shutter speed by allowing more light into the lens with lower f stops. The lighting situation outside and the movement we cannot control and as such we just need the correct size lens, with good quality and hopefully in enough light.

The key middle ground for most lens sizes is 180mm-400mm which most photography will be taken with. The canon 200mm lens found here is a good starting point for seeing what kind of equipment you need.

Lens sizes, availability, usability and the lens size to f-stop ratio are important factors to consider before buying your base model of camera to ensure you can actually buy the parts you need. There are adaptors and off-brand options available if you something doesn't quite fit, however you should expect suboptimal results.

SD card are also an important part of photography. We recommend using high quality class 10 cards with a minimum of 200mb/s read/write speeds. Remember, SD cards fail and cheaper models fail more often.

Private Investigators do a variety of different work, to see the different types of work we do see our blog post on it here. What we actually do can be broken down into 3 types of work: online work, physical work and networking work.

Online work is checking online databases, cross referencing online sources of information such as social media.
Physical work is outside the office such as surveillance
Networking work is gaining information from others such as phone calls and interviews utilising human intelligence.

We then record all this information into case files and present it in a readable logical way for our clients. We usually include a summary and conclusion to the investigation in the report with our professional opinion.

When we begin an investigation our work involves taking all the details the client has and then using that information to discover more details about the person, business and/or item we are investigating. The usual problems when initiating a investigation is differentiating the person the clients wants investigated with others who use the same or a similar name, we need to establish who the correct person is and any identifiable character tics that would in the public record.

Once we have done that we can begin to dig deeper using their personal information as a springboard to unlocking other information available to us in databases.

It is important to cross reference and check your as you go to ensure everything you gather is congruent and of a good standard of proof.

Once you have a reached a certain point you may start collecting data that is important to your client, this is the goal at all times. It is highly dependant on the type of investigation being conducted from this point and so highly varied.

One of the biggest unspoken topics in the PI world especially so in the UK is the topic of rogue PI's with no experience or qualifications. Indeed the industry is full of them and you will read this on many other websites, most blame the lack of regulation and need for a license which surely does not help. Here I will go through the warning signs of a bad firm when searching online.

1. Stock photos

At first glance it may seem professional, lets think about this. A person with advanced level photography skills, high end recording equipment and a business that bases themselves on this.... using stock photos! Nothing says scam like stock photos. You know they either don't have the equipment or don't know how to use, why else use stock photos.

2. 0800, 0300 and other numbers while claiming to be local

Sure some firms may have regional offices that take all calls but the problem is a lot of these claim to be local to you. "Our Poole based Office" and then a 0800 number to call hmmm. I have found many other competitors actually drive around the country using an army of "local" websites all cloned with names changed to drum up work. Then they add this into their bill, 2-5 hours driving plus petrol, who wants to pay for that?

3. Claims of being local when they are not

This happens primarily because of how google and other databases record and prioritise things, if your business name is Private Investigator Dartmoor you will rank highly when someone uses that search term. It's dirty tactics.

4. Diverted calls

You phone up and you hear your call being transferred, you end up speaking to someone who knows nothing about investigative practice and is just there to arrange a call back for you. They won't tell you this though.

5. They have hundreds of websites

Only fraudsters need to the same websites cloned hundreds of times, this ties back to the claims of being local and using national phone numbers.

6. They aren't a registered Ltd

Some firms or individuals try to stay completely anonymous, on it's own this is not a bad idea as you can anger people in this line of work. But if something goes wrong, they will be nowhere to be found.

7. Website content is gobbledegook

Keyword stuffing to get improve their google ranking abusing the SEO (search engine optimisation). If your reading their home page and it has paragraphs and paragraphs about how to be a private investigator and other non-relevant information you know they are keyword stuffing in a pathetic attempt to force google to rank them more highly.

Yes, in the UK, a private investigator can take pictures of you.

A commonly asked question online is: "Can a private investigator take pictures of you?".

It’s 5pm on a frosty evening, your partner pulls up on the driveway of your home after a long day at work. The kids are excited and the food is ready on the table. 5 minutes pass, then 10. You take a peek from behind the curtains at your husband sitting behind the wheel, his mouth is moving and has a grin from ear-to-ear. When you start your own PI firm and finish your qualifications a itch comes over you. You want to use the skills that you have acquired and make a success of the business you have started. But that itch can quickly become despair when you find out running your own business is hard. Finding customers is hard. You will have to work very hard and deliver the best customer service to ensure the smooth operation of your new firm. Without a doubt it is one of the hardest things I have ever done but with persistence comes its rewards.

I would advise anyone in the same situation to really evaluate how much they want to do this because it is not easy and there very little online resources to help. You would think there would be blogs, how to's and wiki's with all the information you need, it couldn't be further from the truth.

When your sat at home wondering when the next case will come, scratching your head as to how to drum up more business without wasting more money on adverts that don't work, you will want to give up. Unfortunately for you the ones who are still here didn't give up and you won't be here with us if you do. It's a tough world out there and competition is fierce.

What equipment does a Private Investigator in the UK need?

As a Private Investigator or Detective ensuring you have the correct equipment is paramount to a successful investigation and client satisfaction. Without the correct kit you could be left in a very awkward position. Not all equipment has to cost the earth but ensuring you have quality items that will not fail when needed is a requirements. Here is a short list of items you will need when embarking on our journey as a PI.

A good pair of binoculars is required when you need to see quickly into the distance, these aren't an every day item and I use them rarely nowadays however they are needed. Spend some time learning about the sizes and you will need at least x40 zoom on the them to get good usage. Try a brand name like Celestron to ensure good quality.

Most PI's have a DSLR camera for gathering evidence, not all PI's have the right telephoto lens. Grab at least a 350mm telephoto lens for those long distance photographs, not the most discreet bit of kit but the shots you can get are amazing at long distance.

Even when in the vehicle a tripod may be needed for telephoto usage to ensure a stable shot. This is doubly important in low light condition when the shutter speed has be decreased and those shakes can cause more problems. Heavy duty tripods are more often needed for longer range photography, the tripid pictured may not be sturdy or strong enough.

When the going gets tough, you may need a portable flood light. At night in the middle of nowhere trying to set up some kit or locate something. You may well find yourself in need of a good portable light. Rechargeable and handy to have a portable flood light is a bit of kit you'll be sorry you didn't pack.
